850 more jobs going

General Mills employs about 35,000 people and 5,500 of those are in Minnesota. They have announced they are cutting 850 jobs and half of those cuts are going to be from the Twin Cities operation.

Sales for General Mills have increased 13% while the company has increased prices in an effort to keep up with rising inflation. CEO Ken Powell says this is the highest rate it has been in 30 years.

But even with the increased revenue, profits fell a bit due to the higher commodity costs.

Xcel reports Q1 earnings dip

First-quarter earnings at Xcel Energy Inc. dropped 4 percent, from $174 million, or 38 cents per share, to $167 million, or 36 cents per share.

The Minneapolis-based power utility said higher gas and electricity margins and increased sales, especially to Colorado and Texas residents, were offset by increases in operating and maintenance expenses and property taxes.

Xcel’s revenues for the quarter increased 4 percent to $2.81 billion from $2.7 billion in the prior-year quarter.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters predicted earnings of 41 cents per share on $2.84 billion in revenue.

Xcel said profits would have been 42 cents per share excluding one-time charges.

Chairman and CEO Richard Kelly reaffirmed Xcel’s 2010 ongoing per-share earnings predictions of $1.55 to $1.65. Analysts estimate year-end earnings at $1.62.

Xcel’s shares (NYSE: XEL) were trading at $21.58 per share Thursday afternoon, up by about 9 cents, or less than 1 percent, for the day.

    Find a fishing boat

    by guest contributor Jimmy Draper

As an avid fisherman I am always on the look out to find a fishing boat. Even though I already own 3, the quest for cheap fishing boats has always been an obsession with me. Some people collect stamps – I collect and sell Boats. Not necessarily for huge profits (which I think I could if that was my goal), but just because all of my family, friends and co-workers are also fisherman …. er, fisherPEOPLE, and someone I know is always looking to find a fishing boat.

In the last year I have had tremendous luck buying cheap fishing boats (among other things) at auction. I have managed to find a fishing boat for 2 of my brothers as well as a co-worker. So I have agreed to share a few tips I have learned along the way on how to get the most benefit out of attending an auction. These tips don’t just apply to cheap fishing boats, but any of the property you may find at auction. I have a acquired repossessed autos, a cheap washer and dryer and even 2nd hand bikes at auction.

Check back tomorrow for my tips on how I succeed at auctions and where I find the best sales to attend.
